The Hidden Engine: Why Your Sprinter’s Generator Needs Just As Much Love As Your Van

Did You Know Your Sprinter Has a Second Engine Hiding Underneath?
November 28, 2025

Picture this: You are parked on a beautiful bluff overlooking the Pacific near Torrey Pines. The sunset is perfect, you’re ready to cook dinner or turn on the A/C, and you push the "Start" button on your generator. It cranks, sputters, and dies. Or worse—it doesn't start at all.

We spend so much time obsessing over the main diesel engine in our Mercedes Sprinters—changing the synthetic oil, checking the DEF fluid, listening to the turbo. But there is another hero in your van life setup that often gets completely ignored.

If you have a generator mounted under your chassis, like the popular Cummins Onan QG 2500 LP (pictured here), you are carrying around a second internal combustion engine. And just like the engine driving your wheels, this one can’t survive on hope alone.

It’s Not Just a "Power Box"—It’s a Combustion Engine

Many van owners in San Diego are surprised when we tell them this: inside that green box tucked under your van is a real engine. It has a piston, a spark plug, an air filter, and—most importantly—oil.

It operates on the same principles as your lawnmower or a motorcycle. It burns fuel (propane, in the case of the LP models) to create mechanical energy, which is then converted into electricit

The "Silent Killer" of Generators: Old Oil and Dirty Filters

Here is the brutal truth about small engines: they work hard. Unlike your Sprinter’s main engine, which gets cooled by a massive radiator and airflow from driving 65 mph down the I-5, your generator is often tucked underneath, running stationary in the heat.

If you don't change the oil, it breaks down. It turns into sludge. It stops lubricating. Eventually, the engine seizes. And replacing a seized generator is a massive, expensive headache that can ruin your camping trip faster than a rainstorm.

The Golden Rule: 1 Year or 100 Hours

So, how often should you show your generator some love? For models like the Onan QG 2500 LP, the manufacturer's golden rule is simple, yet strict:

Change the oil and check filters every 100 hours of run time, or once a year—whichever comes first.

"But I only used it for 10 hours this year!" we hear this a lot. Even if you haven't hit the 100-hour mark, you still need to change the oil annually. Why? Because over time, moisture from the air condenses inside the engine crankcase. That water mixes with the oil, creating acids that corrode internal parts while the generator sits idle in your driveway.

Don't Forget the "Exercise"

Another pro-tip from our shop: Generators hate sitting still. They need to be "exercised." Running your generator for at least one hour every month under load (like running a heater or AC) keeps the internal components lubricated and prevents seals from drying out

Why Bring It to Sprinter Van Solutions?

Let’s be honest—crawling underneath a Sprinter Van to change oil on a generator isn't fun. It’s tight, it’s dirty, and without the right tools, it’s easy to strip a drain plug or make a mess.

At Sprinter Van Solutions in San Diego, we treat your auxiliary power unit with the same respect we treat your Mercedes engine.
  • We know the specs:
We use the exact oil viscosity and filters recommended by Cummins Onan.
  • We inspect the mounting:
While we are down there, we check the mounting brackets and exhaust pipes to ensure nothing has rattled loose from California’s bumpy roads.
  • We save you money:
A simple annual service is a fraction of the cost of a generator rebuild.

Keep the Power On in San Diego

Whether you are boondocking in Anza-Borrego or just tailgating at Petco Park, you rely on your power. Don't let a neglected maintenance schedule leave you in the dark.
If you can't remember the last time your generator had an oil change, it’s probably overdue. Swing by our shop. We’ll get that "second engine" purring like a kitten so you can focus on the adventure, not the voltage.
